01:29 am - Gang of Erin 2008 Retreat
I've just spent a glorious, rejuvenating weekend retreat with my literary agent, Erin Murphy, and nine of her other clients (only one of whom I have met before). We  came from eight states to the Rolling Ridge Retreat and Conference Center in Massachusetts to hang out, discuss writing projects, and focus on building a writing career, school visits, and online/other marketing techniques. Some of us have numerous children's book published, others have books under contract in the publishing process, some are still waiting for that first big sale. Each of us is talented, hard-working and committed to the process of creating quality literature for children and young adult readers. Our beautiful location, pleasant weather, variety of activities, and the variety of our personalities all led to mutual appreciation of each other's work, writing process, and humanity.

In Erin Murphy, we have an agent who willingly shares her keen knowledge, and understanding of today's publishing world, her wonderful sense of humor, and her generous heart. Erin chooses her clients according to the quality of their work and "only works with nice people," so it was easy to trust each other and feel comfortable together.

Since writers work so much in isolation, this retreat was an important way to establish and renew connections with other writers and our agent. Hopefully next year's (Third Annual) Gang of Erin* Retreat will include some of Erin's clients who were not able to join us this year.

Back row: Jeannie Mobley Tanaka, Robert Kinerk, Chris Barton,
Gbemi Amusashonubi-
Perkovich, Anne Broyles
Front row: Zu Vincent, Ruth McNally  Bardshaw, VIckie Coe, Erin Murphy, Audrey Vernick, Kathy Duval.

*"Clients of Erin Murphy, Literary Agent" sounds far too formal for our rowdy group.

Is this the former Natalia in Italia? I heard you just moved back to the States.

I look forward to meeting you, and hope we'll both be at next year's retreat!

Anne
